A non-railfan friend of mine was taking a flight out of Albany, and saw some tracks below. Thinking I might be interested, he snapped a couple of pictures out the window of the plane, netting me a couple of very nice aerial views of Selkirk Yard.

This is a closer aerial look at the huge Selkirk facility. Note the flyover on the right of the yard and the loop track to the bottom left.

My first glimpse of Selkirk came in the summer of 2000, when a friend and I drove up from Connecticut to spend a day railfanning the Albany region. Here we have an SD38/MT6 slug hump set slowly pushing a train over Selkirk's hump. That huge structure in the background is a sanding tower.

Humping is almost complete for this train as the hump units near the crest.

One of the nice things about Selkirk is the preponderance of foreign road units, like this "BNSF merger shot" lashup of an ATSF GE and BN SD60M.

A bridge ("Ben's Bridge") crosses the yard in its center and affords an excellent view into CSX property without trespassing. The only drawback is that it's not really a pedestrian-friendly structure, and you have to climb onto the girders to see over the side. Fortunately, there's not much automobile traffic here. This shot looks north from the bridge into the Selkirk diesel shop.
