An eastbound BNSF general merchandise train crosses the Union Pacific main at Grand Island, NE with one each of the Heritage II paint scheme and the old Santa Fe warbonnet scheme. Too bad they didn't keep the warbonnet - it's a classic.

Nebraska Central is a shortline operation with numerous disconnected operations throughout central Nebraska (as the name would imply). This ex-MKT GP38M is tied down at the line's facility in Grand Island, which is located adjacent to both the Union Pacific yard and a concrete tie manufacturing facility.

One of Union Pacific's brand new SD70M units heads up an eastbound at Grand Island - that's the BNSF line on the bridge. UP has 1000 of these locomotives on order. The wings on the nose certainly spruce up their livery.

Gibbon, NE is where the UP two-track Marysville subdvivision coming up from Kansas City and points south joins up with the two-track transcontinental main line. At this point UP has installed three tracks all the way past North Platte, and regularly runs more than 100 trains a day on the line. We saw more than 50 trains during a 10-hour period. This train is westbound at Gibbon, just west of the Marysville sub split.
