An eastbound intermodal train led by the ubiquitous Norfolk Southern C44-9 begins to carefully descend "The Slide" in Gallitzin, PA. This track has a significantly steeper gradient than the other two tracks descending the hill, and is used exclusively by eastbound trains.

A few seconds after the train in the shot above appeared, an eastbound manifest came out of the Allegheny tunnel, pacing the intermodal. You can clearly see in this shot how much higher "The Slide" is than the other two tracks. The bridge in the background carried the trackage across the New Portage railroad, which was torn out in Penn Central days.
